alex thinks math is cool

 Properties of Real Numbers

Property Words
Numbers
Algebra
Commutative Property of Addition In a sum, you can add the numbers in any order.

4+(-7)

=

-7+4

a+b= b+a
Associative Property of Addition Changing the grouping of the numbers in a sum does not change the sum.

(9+6)+2

    =

9+(6+2)

(a+b)+c

    =

a+(b+c)

Property
Words
Numbers
Algebra
Commutative Property of Multiplication In a product, you can multiply the same numbers in any order.

8(-5) = -5(8)

ab = ba
Associative Property of Multiplication

Changing the grouping of a number in a

product does not change the product.

(3x10) x 4

     =

3 x (10x4)

(ab)c = a(bc)

Distributive Property:

  • distribute a multiplier with different operands

Ex. 4(5+2) = 4(5)+4(2)

Ex 4(x+2) = 4x+8

Rules to Remember:

-No commutative property of subtraction or division

-There is a commutative property of addition and multiplication

-No associative property of subtraction or division

-There is an associative property of multiplication and addition

-Rules for addition and multiplication don't mix operations

  example: (2 x 4) + 1 = 2 x (4 + 1)  (not a property)

Identity Property of Addition

Zero is the operand that does not change the value of a number when it is added

example:  4 + 0 = 4

Identity Property of Multiplication

One is the operand that does not change the value of a number when it is multiplied

example:  4 * 1 = 4

                        The Identity Property!!        by: Schyler

Multipication

*ALWAYS MULTIPLIED BY 1!!!!!

5 * 1= 5

ADDITION

* ALWAYS ADD 0!!!!!

5 + 0= 5
